Watching two movies over two days, one a copy of the other, could provide enough matter to reflect upon. If 12 Angry Men was brilliant, Ek Ruka Hua Faisla was no less appealing.

Watching the Hindi copy on Youtube was not particularly inviting. But having watched it, I can’t really say that it was that bad an experience. A suitable star cast, seasoned direction, intelligent translation and minimal settings equip this movie with all that it needs to be appreciated. The dingy room, the oppressive heat, the lashing rain, the rusty fan, the alert doorman and 12 angry men provide the perfect setting for such a story as depicted in these movies.

It can be watched in 12 parts at the following links – Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8, Part 9, Part 10, Part 11 and Part 12. If only Doordarshan screened such movies as these as often!

Basu Chatterjee and K. K. Raina provide the perfect answer to the pair of  Sidney Lumet and Henry Fonda. One needs to look out for Annu Kapoor and Pankaj Kapur who are in their usual elements, except perhaps the exaggerated tone and paunch of their characters.

  1. I have both bot in my collection, but I haven’t watched 12 angry men yet.
Further, Pankaj Kapur was BRILLIANT in Ek Ruka hua Faisla, I must say. In fact I have always loved his performances (including those of some other others like Anu Kappor (of Antakshari fame), Om Puri, Nassiruddin Shah etc.)

By the way, watch Dharm, starring Pankaj Kapur in lead, if you haven’t already. A number of critics have said “it should be made a mandatory watch”, and trust me, they are right.

  2. Hello,

Pankaj Kapur is truly an actor par excellence. All he needs is a few shots and he can leave an ever lasting impact on his viewers. Although his classics include “Ek Doctor Ki Maut”, “Neem ka Peed” ETC his real life struggles and his unrelentless pursuit of perfection, while not compromising on his principles can teach all actors a lot on how to conduct themselves. I am sorry that Mr Kapur doesnt get the credit that is due towards him. Though I am sure he will be judged by history as one of the best artists that were born in India.
